Some ideas get disproven over time, like the sun revolving around the Earth, and that the speed of light is a fundamental constant. But no one will ever, ever prove that creating a film based on an existing toy is a good idea. The eventual film doesn’t necessarily have to be dumber than dogshit, but even a moderately successful romp like Clue doesn’t automatically prove its most basic concept to be any more intelligent. But that was the ‘80s anyway, when films knew how to make dumb look smart.
So apparently 500 pennies in the wishing well doesn’t do shit, as the hibernation that news about a Troll Dolls movie have come to a belly-jeweling halt, as DreamWorks Animation has made actual progress on the project, and according to The Hollywood Reporter, Shawn Dennis will be in charge of the – gulp - film and TV franchise. Dennis has been VP of Marketing for the American Girl doll brand since 2008, and before that she held high positions in marketing for Dell, Mastercard, Universal Pictures, and the National Football League. I think the only question that isn’t on anybody’s mind is “Can Shawn Dennis make money?”
Luckily, Dennis’ talents won’t just be concerned with those dreaded Troll Dolls, whose character traits are limited to color of hair, and hair length. She’ll be involved with several brands within DreamWorks Animation, which could be starting its own children’s TV channel in the future. That isn’t as good as Pixar getting a channel of course, but Pixar doesn’t sublet all of their characters out for TV shows like DWA does. But at least it isn’t that Adam Sandler Tonka Truck movie, which I used the rest of my wishing well pennies to prevent. You're welcome.
“Trolls is one of those rare, proven and universally adored brands,” Dennis said in a release. "There is incredible potential here to engage kids across multiple platforms in a way that is fun, enduring and meaningful. It is truly an amazing opportunity to be able to re-launch a brand like this one.”
