The Thanksgiving weekend was big news for a handful of major players while the rest of the field had very little to be thankful for. It was a tale of fire and ice as last weekend's number one The Hunger Games: Catching Fire went up against the highly anticipated Disney animated feature Frozen.
Over the regular three day weekend it was Catching Fire that came out on top again, adding $74 million to its nearly $300 million domestic grand total. Frozen banked $66 million for a strong second place, bringing its five day holiday total to $93 million.
But Catching Fire's success didn't stop at number one. The movie earned $110 million between Wednesday and the end of the weekend, smashing through the $82 million record that Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone set for the Thanksgiving five day run.back in 2001. Frozen's $93 million total also topped that record, making the weekend an unusual double record breaker.
At this rate the Catching Fire will easily top its predecessor's $408 million total and soar past Iron Man 3's $409 million domestic total to become the highest grossing movie to date.
The rest of the weekend's newcomers floundered at the bottom of the chart. Sylvester Stallone penned Homefront bowed in at fifth place with less than $7 million and the obscure musical Black Nativity earned less than $4 million for a distant number eight.
