There are few book and TV properties that are quite as popular as Game of Thrones, and the Song of Ice and Fire novels that it's based on. Because in addition to Game being one of the most popular TV shows of all time, there is also a rabid fanbase that is obsessed with George R.R. Martin's long and detailed novels. Those who read the books got a leg up on the rest of the TV audiences, but now the tables has turned. Season 6 marked the series completely surpassing Martin's novels, making new episodes of Game potential spoilers for the books. So when is Martin going to finish the newest book, damnit?
George R.R. Martin recently updated his live journal (yes, he still has one) about where his current projects stand. In the latest entry, Martin revealed his plan for finishing The Winds of Winter- the penultimate novel in the series.
Well, it looks like George R.R. Martin is finally going to finish The Winds of Winter. You hear that sound? It's the droves of loyal readers cheering. After all, the last book released was way back in 2011.
George R.R. Martin is known for taking a ton of time to write each of his Song of Ice and Fire novels. Because of the extremely detailed nature of the novels (seriously, he describes EVERYTHING), they take years to complete. The first book was released back in 1996, and the series isn't even close to being completed. Because Martin has yet another novel to start once Winds of Winter is finally released.
But this is the first time that the novelist has given a more concrete timeline for his writing. It seems that George R.R. Martin is determined to finish The Winds of Winter by 2017's end, so he'll be clearing his schedule in order to accommodate more time for writing. It's about damn time.
Surely, George R.R. Martin is feeling a certain pressure from novel fans who are also watching HBO's fantasy drama. With the stories quickly coming to a close in the final two (short) seasons, Game of Thrones has the potential to totally spoil the final novels before they're released. For example, If the books follow closely to what we've been seen, then it appears that the next novel will see Arya return to Westeros, and the parentage of Jon Snow will finally be revealed.
Of course, it's entirely possible that George R.R. Martin is keeping some secrets in order to ensure his final two books stand apart from HBO's series. We'll just have to wait and see.
