This Is Us has been a breakout hit of the Fall 2016 TV lineup thanks to its combination of heart, humor, and masterful performances. The NBC drama has been a ratings winner from the very beginning, and the numbers have been more or less consistent in the weeks since. The show hit a massive ratings milestone in its final episode of 2016. The fall finale of This Is Us got such a huge bump in viewership that it broke a major broadcast television record.
The This Is Us fall finale aired on December 6, and the Live+3 numbers indicate that 15.4 million people tuned in overall and attracted an impressive 4.49 rating in the valuable 18-49 demographic. The Live+same day numbers for the fall finale were 10.949 million viewers and a 2.82 rating. The jump from 10.949 million in Live+same day to 15.4 million in Live+3 marks the biggest lift in viewership ever for a Tuesday series on one of the Big 4 networks. It was a fantastic way to end 2016 for the freshman drama.
The 4.49 rating was a jump of 1.67 points, which represents the second biggest ratings lift for a Tuesday series on the Big 4 networks dating back to January 2007. The 4.49 rating is also the highest yet achieved by an episode of This Is Us, beating the previous episode's rating of 4.22 in the key 18-49 demo, which is also not too shabby.
On top of the highest bump in viewers and second highest bump in ratings, the fall finale was the most-viewed hour of Big 4 television in the 9 p.m. time slot for the first time in a surprise switcheroo. The Live+same day numbers had CBS' Bull winning the night with 11.675 million viewers compared to This Is Us' 10.949 million. This Is Us overcame the deficit for Live+3 in a big way. The 15.4 million from This Is Us beat the 14.9 from Bull.
December has been a successful month for This Is Us. In addition to the ratings and viewership victories, the show earned three Golden Globe nominations in major categories. The series itself is nominated for Best TV Series, Drama, alongside Game of Thrones, The Crown, Stranger Things, and Westworld. Both Mandy Moore and Chrissy Metz are up for Best Supporting Actress. The three This Is Us nominations were the only nominations for any NBC show. Considering that the Big 4 networks CBS and Fox were both shut out of the Golden Globe nominations altogether, NBC must be grateful that This Is Us got the network on the map for the awards show, especially considering that Jimmy Fallon will be hosting the Golden Globes on NBC on January 8.
