Subscribe To True Detective Season 3 Is Apparently Still Happening, And It May Have Its First Star Updates
HBO blew audiences away back in 2014 with the first season of True Detective. Viewers were a little less wowed by Season 2, largely due to how it was rushed through production after Season 1 became such a sensation. The show has been in limbo since back in 2015 with no solid news of a third season entering production. Well, we still can't say if Season 3 is happening for sure, but HBO does have an Oscar-winning actor in talks to star. Mahershala Ali of Moonlight could be the next leading man of a season of True Detective.
Mahershala Ali has landed the starring role of True Detective Season 3, according to The Tracking Board. The deal hasn't closed just yet, so it's impossible to say definitively that another batch of episodes is in the works with Ali as lead, but HBO insiders are reportedly confident that the deal will go through. Unfortunately, there are no details currently available about the potential plot of Season 3, so we can't even guess what kind of character Ali would play. Still, he's shown enough versatility as an actor that I think we can be confident he can handle whatever HBO throws at him.
This piece of casting news indicates that True Detective is continuing its trend of casting big-name movie stars as the leads. Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson starred in Season 1, and Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn, and Rachel McAdams starred in Season 2. Mahershala Ali made headlines when he quite deservedly won an Academy Award for his performance as Juan in 2016's Moonlight, and his appearances in shows like House of Cards and Luke Cage prove that he has star power on the small screen as well as the big screen. He could be the perfect person to bring True Detective back to television after a few years off.
While nothing seems to be set in stone just yet, clues have been dropping in recent months that HBO was actively working on a new season of True Detective. Writer David Milch of Deadwood and NYPD Blue joined forces with True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto back in March, and HBO programming chief Casey Bloys has been vocal about True Detective possibly having a future beyond the Season 2 finale.
We can only hope that all the time since the end of Season 2 in 2015 means that the True Detective team will be able to create something as fabulous as Season 1 yet again. Casting Mahershala Ali can only be a step in the right direction; as long as the show can sign other fantastic actors to round out the cast, Season 3 could be phenomenal.
