Between streaming services, cable networks, and premium channels there is a wealth of great TV content currently being produced. This has brought a ton of A-list film stars to the small screen, and perhaps the most prevalent from the last year was HBO's Big Little Lies. The drama featured a stunning cast of film actresses, and cleaned house this year at the Emmy Awards in the limited series categories. Since it's release and fantastic finale, there have been rumors swirling that it would be renewed for a second season, and now we've finally got the verdict.
Big Little Lies will officially return to HBO for Season 2, with some changes happening behind the scenes. While the trio of producers in Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, and David E. Kelley (who also writes the series) will all help to bring us back to Monterey, and all of the drama that will no doubt ensue in the show's sophomore season.
While this is a particularly exciting concept, original director Jean-Marc Vallée will no longer be attached to the project. Instead, Season 2 will be helmed by filmmaker Andrea Arnold (American Honey, Transparent). When rumors began swirling about the show returning for a second season (with book writer Liane Moriarty helping to craft story ideas), Vallée was adamant that the Big Little Lies shouldn't return. The ending was crafted beautifully, and the show itself was a visual treat filled with great performances that could have ended with the Season 1 finale.
But then the awards and fan excitement started coming in. This response was also listed as a major reason why the show has returned back, as told by a statement released by Nicole Kidman (via Variety). Big Little Lies won a whopping eight primetime Emmys this year, and awards season is only just beginning. Given just how many trophies they managed to accrue, and the cast continually teasing the possibility of a renewal, it should come to no great surprise that BLL Season 2 is now officially on the way.
Narratively, there is still plenty of dynamics to explore in Big Little Lies' second season. The group of mothers seem to have buried the hatchet of their issues, as they united in the wake of Perry's accidental death. That shared experience seems to have bonded them, as they sold they same false story to Detective Quinlan. And while the beautiful final montage saw the ladies with their children at the beach, a pair of binoculars revealed that Quinlan may not be letting the matter go.
While new plot points will have to be created, there are a few more trickles of information to be mined from Liane Moriarty's original novel, particularly Zoe Kravitz's character Bonnie. And while the women seem united, their interpersonal drama is no doubt still an issue, as well as the pressure of keeping their secret about the truth.
