Spoilers ahead for HBO's Big Little Lies Season 1.
2017 was an exciting year for TV, as tons of fantastic new content hit small screens. The two biggest hits of the year were female-focused stories, with both Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale and HBO's Big Little Lies. The latter cleaned house in the limited series categories at the Emmys, with rumors of a second season beginning before Season 1 even ended. Eventually the renewal happened, with the legendary Meryl Streep joining the cast in Season 2. Small tidbits of information have since been released, and now three more actors have been confirmed to return for Big Little Lies' sophomore season on the air.
Actors James Tupper, Jeffrey Nordling and Iain Armitage have all been confirmed to reprise their roles as Nathan Carlson, Gordon Klein, and Ziggy Chapman. Nathan is Bonnie's husband and Madeline's ex, one of the many husbands involved in the series. Gordon Klein is the husband of Laura Dern's Renata, with the two constantly in strife over the bullying of their daughter Amabella. Armitage had a star making moment as Jane's troubled son Ziggy, eventually helping him land the title role in Young Sheldon.
The news of the trio of actors' return (which comes to us from Deadline) should not be much of a surprise for Big Little Lies fans out there. The series is very much focused on the five families, so BLL will need all of the starring cast and their onscreen children to return in order for Season 2 to even make sense. Bonnie and Renata are very much anchored by their husbands, and they'll need to rely on them if they're going to keep the secret of Perry's death under wraps.
Iain Armitage's Ziggy was biggest character in regards to the kids of Big Little Lies. Jane and Ziggy just have themselves to lean on, and Jane's story was very much focused on trying to keep her little family afloat. Ziggy was accused of hurting Amabella in the show's first episode, and also spent the majority of his scenes wondering about who his father (aka Jane's rapist) was.
It should be interesting to see how the three new returning actors and their characters are affected when Big Little Lies finally returns to Season 2. Season 1's finale "You Get What You Need" revealed that Celeste's husband Perry (Alexander Skarsgard) was actually the one who attacked and ultimately impregnated Jane those years ago. That means Ziggy is related to the twins, which should be a fascinating dynamic to explore. It should also be fascinating to see if Nathan and Gordon's wives cue them into the secret of Perry's death, or if that secrecy erodes their respective marriages.
