Pretty Little Liars Ashley Benson Hanna Marin Freeform

Sara Shepherd gave television a long-running gift in Pretty Little Liars. Her books were the source for the television adaptation of the same name. Seven seasons and one spinoff later, she is poised to kick off another TV show.

The author is set to produce the new streaming series on Brat, per a Deadline exclusive. Like Pretty Little Liars initially was, this new TV show is centered around teens. Is there a mystery too? Here is what you need to know.

What Is Sara Shepard's New Show, And What's It About?

Unlike Pretty Little Liars, this new show takes place in the past. Not the far too distant past though. It is set in the 1990s, a time when Full House was still in the midst of its original run. The action centers around an elite boarding school and lead character Nellie Chambers, per Tiger Beat.

Nellie is coming off of a really rough year after losing her mom. She thinks she is on the verge of getting a fresh start when she is accepting at Crown Lake Boarding School. Her dream of better days ahead is quickly dashed as an unsettling reality is revealed.

Taking its name from the boarding school at its epicenter, the new show is entitled Crown Lake. That title sounds prestigious and picturesque. Could conflict involving aspiring Queen Bees come into play? Such a conflict would give the royal title some added meaning.

So, It's Not Based On A Book?

No, which means Sara Shepherd will not be bringing her touch to the series via adaptation. Crown Lake is an original series. Shepherd will produce it. The writers room for Brat (the streaming service) is reportedly supervised by the streamer’s co-founder Rob Fishman.

Who Stars In Sara Shepard's New Show?

Among those starring in Crown Lake is Dog with a Blog’s Francesca Capaldi. She will take on the lead role of Nellie Chambers. Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn’s Kyla-Drew will star as Tiffany. Andi Mack’s Emily Skinner will play Chloe. Check out a picture of the cast via Instagram below:

What Is Brat?

Brat is Gen Z’s streaming service, proving that there can never be enough streaming platforms. The streamer’s other series include A Girl Named Jo and Mani. Crown Lake will air this summer, along with those shows’ new seasons.

Crown Lake will premiere June 20 on Brat. Binge-watching it in its entirety right off the bat will not be possible. Like DC Universe did with Titans, new episodes will debut weekly, with Crown Lake on Thursdays. The Pretty Little Liars spinoff, The Perfectionists, airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET on Freeform.
