The Internet has been traumatized by the Cats movie trailers, so Project Runway Season 18 having a Cats-inspired design challenge? Meow. That could've been a hiss-tacular disaster.
The hot takes over the Cats movie -- starring Taylor Swift, Jennifer Hudson, Ian McKellen, Rebel Wilson, James Corden, and more -- have not been flattering so far. However, Project Runway just had a "Cats of the Urban Jungle" challenge in honor of the new movie, and the results were better than you might expect.
That's not to say the Cats movie will win over haters, but at least there are some solid designs out there inspired by the film. (And also an "exotic diaper," but let's not talk about that yet.)
Project Runway Season 18 aired Episode 2 on Thursday, December 12, 2019. Spoilers ahead on how it turned out.
For once, I agreed with the judges on the winner -- Marquise Foster created a striking mixed prints top and "safari skort" that worked perfectly for the urban streetwear challenge.
On Project Runway, it's advertised that you can buy certain winning looks through BravoTV.com. You can indeed order Marquise's Gone Wild Shirt online for $195.00 or his Safari Skort for $158.00.
Delvin McCray came in second place for going with a bird print over lion or cat-related prints. (Since designers were meant to take inspiration from the Cats movie, most went for the obvious cat-related animal prints.)
Granted, not every Cats-inspired look was a success. Sadly, Veronica Sheaffer was sent home for her "exotic diaper" look:
I swear, every season at least one designer answers the siren call of the diaper. It almost never works out. (Gretchen had a diaper look in her finale collection and won Project Runway Season 8, but let's never talk about that again.)
That makes Veronica the third designer to go home after both Jenn and Asma were sent packing in the shocking double elimination of the Project Runway Season 18 premiere. There are lessons to be learned from that!
Project Runway seasons often find pop culture references for various challenges. Last year's Season 17 -- the first one back on Bravo with new hosts and Christian Siriano as mentor instead of Tim Gunn -- had a challenge inspired by Elton John's Rocketman movie.
Next week, Project Runway Season 18 is giving us the always glorious Unconventional Materials challenge in "Sleigh the Runway"! In the December 19 episode, the designers will be awakened by a surprise visitor. They'll be challenged to show their holiday spirit in the perfect party dress. Channeling their own holiday memories, the designers must transform a winter wonderland into a wearable wonder. That should be fun!
Project Runway airs Thursdays from 9:30 to 11 p.m. on Bravo. Meanwhile, the Cats musical movie opens in theaters on December 20. Keep up with everything premiering in early 2020 with our handy TV schedule.
Gina grew up in Massachusetts and California in her own version of The Parent Trap. She went to three different middle schools, four high schools, and three universities -- including half a year in Perth, Western Australia. She currently lives in a small town in Maine, the kind Stephen King regularly sets terrible things in, so this may be the last you hear from her.
