Despite History Channel’s misfire with The Kennedys, an early foray into miniseries, the channel is pushing forward with several more history-oriented mini projects. One project, Mark Burnett’s The Bible, seems as if it could run a little too broad to pan out in one miniseries. However, History Channel’s other big mini-project, The Hatfields and McCoys: An American Vendetta, is shaping up to have a fine cast in a series that should have the perfect scope.

Back in May, Kevin Costner was tapped to play clan patriarch Devil Anse Hatfield. Now, THR is stating Bill Paxton will play opposing family man Randall McCoy. Paxton has had a nice break since Big Love faded so quietly into TV yesteryear it was only left On Demand for a month. A high-profile miniseries could be just the ticket to getting his acting back on track. It also helps that Kevin Reynolds, the man behind such glorious projects as Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and The Count of Monte Cristo, is set to direct.

If you don’t know much about the Hatfields or the McCoys, all you really need to know is that a Hatfield fought for the Union in a crowded Confederate era. The McCoys killed the Hatfield boy, then there were some property disputes, and then there was a knocked-up chick that led to 30 years of violence between the two families. If you want to check out the PG version of the story, you can always read Ann Rinaldi’s The Coffin Quilt. Or, you can just wait for History Channel to fill in some juicy details.
