The Grammy's Deliver Top Notch Performances

The 49th Annual Grammy Awards Ceremony was a big night for many musicians. Mary J. Blige took home multiple awards, as did the Dixie Chicks who took home Best Record of the Year and Best Album of the Year. While the handing out of awards is the reason for the event, it was the performances that made the ceremony truly worth watching this year.

The speeches were uneventful for the most part. Natalie Maines of The Dixie Chicks made sure to throw in a few snarky words even going as far as quoting Nelson from ‘The Simpsons’ with a humorous “ha-ha.” When accepting one of the three awards she won, Mary J. Blige took the opportunity to thank a very long list of people. She also mentioned some of the bad publicity she’s gotten throughout her career and went on to say “I want to use this success to build bridges, not to burn them.”

After watching the ‘American Idol’ auditions over the last few weeks, I had started to get used to watching terrible singers and talented amateurs belt out songs on television. In a way, this made this year’s Grammy’s that much better to watch because everyone who performed brought their A-game to the stage.

The range of singers that performed throughout the night is what made the event entertaining from beginning to end. Whether it was Mary J. Blige belting out her hit song, “Be Without You,” Justin Timberlake singing “What Goes Around… Comes Around,” Shakira working her hips while singing “Hips Don’t Lie,” or the performances by some of the more veteran singers like Smokey Robinson and Lionel Richie, there was something for everyone at this years Grammys.
