Tim Allen returns to a starring role in a TV comedy tonight when ABC premieres their new half-hour comedy Last Man Standing. Once again, the former Home Improvement star will be playing a husband, a father, and an all around man’s man. Will TV viewers love Mike Baxter as much as they loved Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor?

Last Man Standing stars Allen as Mike Baxter, a manly-man who likes the outdoors and drives a pick-up truck. This suits him well in his job at an outdoor sporting goods store, however at home, which he shares with his wife and their daughters, things are a little different. The cast also includes Nancy Travis, Kaitlyn Dever, Molly Ephraim, Alexandra Krosney, Christoph Sanders and Hector Elizondo. You’ll get a good idea of what things are like for Allen’s character at work and at home in the clips below.

Just last week, I was thumbing through an old issue of Entertainment Weekly when I came across the TV ratings for that week (March 25, 1994), which you can view here) and there at the top was Home Improvement, earning a whopping 44 million viewers for that week’s episode. Of course, these were the days before DVRs and before basic cable was presenting serious competition with original programs of their own (back when a rerun of The X-Files could make the Bottom 10 with a meager 8.7 million viewers). Last Man Standing stands little chance to come close to 44 million viewers but given the love for Tim Allen, I’m thinking the show will do ok by today’s standards.

Last Man Standing premieres Tuesday, October 11 at 8:00 p.m. on ABC.
