The Voice Gets More Popular, Extends Programming

Regardless of whether or not audiences are down with Blake Shelton’s ridiculous side comments, NBC’s The Voice has become a breakout program, replete with crazy commercial opportunities and an early renewal for a second season. Because of the show’s popularity, The Voice has gone through some changes since its inception. Recently, the live shows were extended from one to two hours. Now, as The Voice moves from battle rounds into the elimination challenges, more changes are on the horizon.

For its last couple of weeks, NBC has announced The Voice will add a second live show to its scheduled programming. According to Deadline, this means an extra episode will be played on Wednesdays, in addition to the live shows already scheduled for Tuesdays. As of now, Cinema Blend isn’t certain whether this will change the nature of the competition, or just leave room for more promo spots and videos of the contestants working on songs. In the best-case scenario, more of The Voice would mean less of America’s Got Talent, so that’s something we can hope for.

Since most programming on NBC has already finished for the season, adding scheduled times is less of a big deal than giving a program a primetime spot, though a little extra exposure has never hurt anyone. The Voice has already been given the post-Superbowl slot in 2012. No word on how all this extra screen time has gone over with Piers Morgan and the rest of the crew at AGT, but it’s becoming increasingly clear where NBC’s priorities lie when it comes to its summer programs.
