Saturday Night Live promos have been known to occasionally be awkward in the past, but I don’t know if I’ve seen one quite as awkward as the promo for the upcoming episode of the series, set to air “live from New York” this Saturday night. Despite the weird promo material, the episode should be an exciting one. Bruce Willis is signed on to host the series for only the second time in his long and illustrious career. Saturday’s episode also marks the first time the man has popped up in the sketch comedy series since 1989. Additionally, the musical guest this week will be Katy Perry, who is popping up on the show in support of her new album Prism.
You’d think that Perry and Willis might bring a charming blend of the old and the new to this week’s SNL promo, but it’s actually super off-putting. The promoters got Perry to whip open a jacket, revealing her “hosting tip #1,” which happens to be showing some skin. The Die Hard franchise actor then sizes Perry up before pointing out he is already showing some skin, obviously via his bald head. Despite Perry’s sex appeal and Willis’ obvious lack thereof, the promo is pretty weird, although it is almost saved by the priceless look on Perry’s face before the segment ends.
Honestly, I have no idea what to expect from Willis in this weekend’s SNL episode. The man’s clearly capable of getting some laughs and has proven he gets comedy through many of the films in his body of work. However, I’ve never really seen him go full-caricature before, and I hope it’s not as cringeworthy as action actor Daniel Craig’s attempt at sketch comedy a year or so ago.
As excited as I am to see Willis on the show for the second time ever, I honestly wish Perry was getting another shot at hosting. The singer actually hosted an episode I didn’t get to see back in 2011, and by all reports, did a great job. I wouldn’t be shocked if the show actually did ask her to host this time around, only to get a no. Hosting the late night sketch comedy series is a pretty big time commitment for a whole week, and Perry is in the throes of promoting her fourth studio album, which drops on October 22. She’s been releasing music left and right, and her debut single, “Roar,” has been crushing. It would be a huge burden to take an acting gig on top of all that, but if we are lucky, maybe the singer will still pop up in a sketch or two.
You can catch SNL on NBC Saturday night at 11:30 p.m. ET.
