Potential spoilers for The Walking Dead comics and TV series ahead.
The midseason break for The Walking Dead is seemingly never ending. Luckily Robert Kirkman, who created, writes for, and produces both the AMC series and comic book source material has been rather chatty lately regarding the second half of Season 6. While fans have been waiting on bated breath for Negan to make his first appearance, Kirkman recently opened up about another badass comic character who is joining the fold: Jesus. Of Jesus’ role, and how it related to the main cast Kirkman said:
They’ve been surviving for a reason, whether they were at a place like Alexandria that’s very safe, or they’re a great leader of their group and somewhat sadistic but in control of their group like Negan, or someone who’s an absolute, complete badass like Jesus. He’s smart, quick, very athletic. He’s kinda been surviving on his feet. He’s going to be bringing a lot to the show. There’s some cool stuff coming with him.
This is pretty exciting stuff. Honestly, it sounds like we should perhaps be more excited for Jesus’ premiere than Negan’s for a few reasons.
First, we’re probably going to see Jesus much earlier than we see Negan. While Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s casting as the comic villain was announced a few months ago, it is unclear when we’ll actually be seeing the foul mouthed lunatic. Rumors have been circulating that he won’t make an appearance till the finale, especially since Andrew Lincoln has stated that the finale is the most gruesome of the show’s history. So, while The Walking Dead is returning next month, we’ll probably be waiting around for Negan for a while.
Jesus; however, was caught being filmed a while ago. During Glenn-gate, fans caught shots of Glenn and Jesus filming a scene together (which revealed that Glenn was indeed alive). So, we can assume that since production on Jesus, played by British actor Tom Payne, began in September, we’ll be seeing him on the small screen real soon.
Another reason to be excited about Jesus is that he’s a friend to Rick’s group in the comics. Considering that Alexandria is facing a plethora of foes in the Season 6’s back half, the group is going to need a friendly face. Our survivors are going to have to somehow find a way to get the horde of walkers out of their home, while also battling the impending threats of Negan, The Saviors, and The Wolves. Jesus might be a saving grace, pun intended.
Finally, I’m excited to just see the deadliness of Jesus. In the comics, he’s one of the most effective fighters of the group. Considering our main survivors, with the exception of Eugene and Father Useless Gabriel, are pretty tough that’s saying something. His skill in hand-to-hand combat rivals that of Michonne, which is going to be just plain epic to see. Per Robert Kirkman’s above statement to EW, it can assumed that we’re going to see some insane fight sequences from Jesus.
The Walking Dead returns in AMC on February 14th. Happy Valentine’s Day to us all.
