The latest bit of Walking Dead news involves a mysterious bit of casting for Season 5. The Wire star Seth Gilliam has boarded the AMC zombie drama as a series regular. While the actor is confirmed for the part -- marking the third Wire actor to be a regular on the series -- the character Gilliam will be playing is unknown at present.
THR posted the news, noting that Seth Gilliam joins Chad Coleman (Tyreese) and Larry Gilliard Jr. (Bob) as another veteran of HBO's outstanding drama The Wire. as for who Gilliam will play in The Walking Dead, THR notes that a casting breakdown describes the character of Michael as "friendly with a puckish demeanor who also has a haunted side," however the site notes that Michael is a dummy-name and it sounds like the description for the character may not be accurate either. So this really is a mystery role and it sounds like the writers intend to keep it that way, at least for now.
THR's speculation is that Gilliam will play the preacher Gabriel Stokes, a character who encounters Rick and his group after leaving his church, where he was hiding out from the zombies. If that turns out to be true then it sounds like he's likely to be a friend to Rick's group. Perhaps fans of Robert Kirkman's comics have different theories about who Gilliam might play. Of course, it's entirely possible that this is a new role, but I'm going to speculate not, otherwise why all the secrecy? Maybe the executive producers are keeping the role under wraps for now because they don't want to give away some major, unrevealed detail about the plot of Season 5 as it ties to the comics. Or maybe they just want to hold off on the character announcement. We can only speculate. But Seth Gilliam's casting as a series regular is one more piece to what we already know about Season 5 of The Walking Dead.
In addition to playing Sergeant (and Detective) Ellis Carver on The Wire, Seth Gilliam's credits include a recurring spot as a detective on Law & Order: Criminal Intent, and appearances in Damages, CSI: Miami, Nurse Jackie and Law & Order. More recently, he's been recurring as veterinarian Dr. Alan Deaton on MTV's Teen Wolf. Deaton serves as a mentor to lead character Scott in Teen Wolf. Gilliam appears in all three seasons of the MTV drama.
Seth Gilliam joins newly promoted series regulars Alanna Masterson (Tara), Christian Serratos (Rosita) and Andrew J. West (Gareth) among the steadily fluctuating cast of The Walking Dead. The fact that Gilliam being made a series regular suggests that he'll be around for a while, at least throughout the fifth season, anyway.
