The Devil Wears Prada Synopsis

Based on the best-selling novel, THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA stars two-time Academy Award® winner Meryl Streep as high-powered fashion magazine editor Miranda Priestly, and Anne Hathaway, as Miranda’s new assistant – a small-town girl trying to survive her impossibly demanding new boss.

Long touted as the next big thing, Devil Wears Prada star Anne Hathaway has never really had her big breakout. She first burst onto the scene in 2001 at the age of nineteen in the cute, much loved teenage girl geared movie The Princess Diaries, but since then her career has been a series of stutter steps. She looked for acting legitimacy with a supporting role in the Heath Ledger powered Indie Nicholas Nickleby. No one saw it, including most awards voters. She went back to the kids movie genre in 2004 with starring roles in Ella Enchanted and another Princess Diaries Neither movie fared well.

Determined to shed her kid friendly image, she switched track and landed a starring role in the movie Havoc. After more than a year of delays, Havoc never actually made it to theaters in the United States, and ended up relegated to straight to DVD release. The film got tons of buzz, but only because Anne takes off her top. With the nudity barrier broken Anne landed a part in one of the most acclaimed movies of last year, Brokeback Mountain, where she again freed her chest of clothing constraints. Though everyone else in the cast received awards attention, Anne was virtually ignored, except again, by male fans delighted with her repeat nudity performance.

Now Anne’s getting an inexplicable shot at a starring role in a respectable, quirky, girl in the city comedy opposite a Hollywood luminary. Does her track record warrant this kind of studio investment? Maybe not. But there’s no denying Anne’s charm, and perhaps a movie like this is really the right place for her to show it. She doesn’t belong in gritty Indie movies and you can’t do little girl movies forever. She’s gotten a chance in the type of film that really ought to be her niche: A quirky, cute, fish out of water comedy about a small town girl making it in the big city. Anne’s a perfect fit.

It’s directed by David Frankel, a career television director who has spent the past few years earning his living on episodes of “Sex in the City” and more recently “Entourage”. Girl in the city is right up his alley, and with a perfect casting fit in Anne Hathaway and a brilliant, legendary Hollywood actress in the form of Meryl Streep, Frankel should be able to turn The Devil Wears Prada into a success. The trailers have a sharp, quirky, dialogue heavy tone, and the story isn’t centered around yet another boorish romance. What’s not to like? The Devil Wears Prada stands a chance.
