While designing their squad-based shooter Aliens: Colonial Marines, Gearbox Software is looking to the Aliens films for inspiration. Not all the films, though.

"The forums are in the back of my mind when designing, yes, but they are obviously not the sole source of direction," said Gearbox's Lorin Wood on the game's official forum. "First and foremost we're trying to stick with the films (Alien, Aliens and Alien 3 are the only true Alien films and that is where we're drawing from)."

In other words, they're politely ignoring Alien Resurrection, Alien vs. Predator and Alien vs. Predator: Requiem...which is pretty much what fans of the series do, too. Does that mean we won't have any alien/predator or alien/human hybrids to fight? Too bad. I like shooting terrible story ideas.

There's an outside chance we could see this game by the end of 2010. Sega says it depends on the sales of Rebellion's Aliens vs. Predator game, though. Gearbox is developing it for the PS3, PC, and Xbox 360. An unnamed studio is creating a DS version.
