Blackspace Kickstarter Takes A Whole New Approach To Deep Space RTS
PixelFoundry, an indie group made up of former Electronic Arts developers, has announced Blackspace on Kickstarter. The game isn't entirely new and was originally announced as the company's first game back in February, earlier this year. The small team is looking for some extra funding to bring the game across the finish line for a small RTS audience.
First off, Blackspace is not one of those “broadly appealing” RTS games. I can already tell this is going to be one of those deliberate, RTS, tower-defense-esque games that put players into a position where you really can't sleepwalk through the experience and hope to make it out okay. I'm not going to spend too much time explaining things that the video explains quite well, so just check out the gameplay below in the new Kickstarter video.
I have to admit, this looks fantastic. It really, really does. I'm not a big fan of RTS games but the concept and the sort of dark, lonely approach to the game's atmosphere helps set Blackspace apart from all the other games out there.
The physics-based mining, the base construction and the sort of real-time action-oriented gameplay will really help usher in a new mold for the RTS genre. Again, I love the concept. I'd also love to see what else they have in store assuming their Kickstarter succeeds.
If you like what PixelFoundry has up their sleeve and you're digging what they're selling, feel free to contribute what you can (and keep a leash on those wallets, times are still tough) over on the Official Kickstarter Page. They have a long ways to go at a $350,000 goal but they have just under a month to get there. So we'll see how that turns out.
