Fortnite Screenshots Reveal Sandbox Survival

At San Diego Comic Con, Epic Games showed off more of their upcoming game Fortnite. The Unreal Engine 4-powered co-op game is on track for a 2013 release.

In Fortnite, players explore the game world, collect building materials, and then construct a fortress. Once night falls, the game changes dramatically. Zombies and other creatures rise up and attack the players, and they must fend off this invasion from the safety of their base.

The Horde mode from Epic's Gears of War, in which players beat back waves of increasingly strong enemies, has been endlessly copied by rival games. Fortnite is offering a new twist on that formula, though. Scavenging materials and planning fortifications will test players' teamwork in an entirely different way.

Fortnite is currently in development for the PC. There's no mention of other platforms.
