Nintendo has been behind in the online landscape for quite some time now. The Gamecube had virtually no content available for playing online, but the House of N seems intent on bringing Wii up to speed in the race for web supremacy.
They have already taken giant steps in that arena with the Wii Channels. Getting news, weather, and downloadable games onto your system in a few moments is fantastic, but without online multiplayer it’s just icing without a cake.
In an interview with Mercury News, the voice of Nintendo himself, Reggie Fils Aime, confirmed that Pokemon Battle Revolution will be the first game on Wii to feature online play when it is released in America. Online development kits have apparently been handed out to developers and more titles will be utilizing the function.
As for what type of online play PBR would actually feature, Fils Aime was somewhat more tight lipped, offering no information on that theater of play. Most likely the functionality will be limited to a battle arena where players can bring their Pokemon to battle other users.
PBR will also reportedly include connectivity with the Nintendo DS handheld.
It’s great to see that Nintendo is finally getting on the right track with their online infrastructure. Despite this decent sized step it will be some time before they will be considered a true competitor in the online multiplayer landscape.
PBR is a step in the right direction, but I can’t help but believe that Nintendo underestimates how completely righteous a Pokemon MMO would be. An online Pokerena is cool and all, but a true MMO would bring to fruition every Pokefan’s dream of competiting to be lead trainer of a Pokegym in their home Poketown. The possibilities are endless and Nintendo continues to think small potatoes. What a shame.

I don't think it's fair to assume what Nintendo is thinking of as far as small potatoes are concerned - for all you know a Pokemon MMO could be on the verge of announcement.
I hope "The House of N" sees this one. I have been playing an mmo called Everquest for about 4 years now, i own 2 accounts, and devote about 2-3 hours a day playing, and more when occasions rise. After admitting to how much i love EQ, I will say this: the time it would take me to quit playing EQ for a Pokemon MMO is around a nanosecond (very small amount of time). I'm not going to say that nintendo is stupid for no creating one yet, but i will say that they will be missing out on countless subscriptions if they dont do it at all. Assuming that Nintendo knows this already, I would like to encourage them to please hurry up and do so. Not that my patience will run out, but i just can't take it anymore.
~Going to sleep now, hope i dream of Pokemon Online
I gave up on there ever going to be Pokémon RPG afew years ago, since it seemed that there would never be one despite the numerous letters I sent to nintendo. I still doubt this will happen considering it's just a rumour and hasn't been announced. Pokémon battle Revolution looks good though.
I think that even if nintendo makes a mmorpg of pokemon, it's not going to be announced this summer/early fall, assuming that they've been working on it under wraps upon wraps upon wraps since the made the first fully functioning wii. Which maybe they have if they have any aspiration to make several mountains of money. Pokemon has to be one of the most consistently popular franchises in history.Simply the utterance of a pokemon mmo by nintendo is stimulating enough to revive any fading fan's faith. This would really suck for the makers of ekaiyo. they've been working for quite a while to make their pokemon mmo.
As for nintendo thinking small potatoes, that's not true. I personally think they just wanted let desire for an mmo grow and grow to the point that if they do make one, that it will just completely obliterate xbox's and playstation's chances of success with any demographic that could be interested in pokemon. Plus, the game itself would have to be massive and would have to take forever to put together. simply because it would be the most anticipated mmorpg EVER. Even people who used to like pokemon before but don't now would buy because anyone that's ever liked pokemon, liked it because they wanted to be a trainer. there would have to be a ridiculously large map and amount of servers to make the game worthwhile though because pokemon has gathered so many fans in the past decade.
That aside, it would cost them a buttload of money for nintendo to make it, so they may not ever make a pokemon mmorpg. Sorry to break it to anybody who didn't know. It would be a big risk for nintendo because to they have to make it up to everyone's standards, otherwise it would be considered a flop and all the interest in the series as a whole would be damaged. Regardless, Ive been hoping for a pokemon mmo forever and won't stop regardless of what the facts say. I just have to say to anyone that is truly dedicated unlike me, just wait. Even if nintendo never makes a pokemon mmorpg, a group of fans have already taken the responsibility under their wing. The project site is www.z00ttheater.com/
