Paramount is staying pretty tight lipped about what they’re using as the story for their new Star Trek movie. All we know is that it will be a prequel… sort of. I say sort of, because even that’s not certain. After all Leonard Nimoy is in it as Spock, and he’s a little old to pull off young Spock.
There has however, been no shortage of rumors concerning the film’s plot. Unfortunately almost all of those have been awful, rumors of another lame time travel script or a story which completely erases all the history of Star Trek and overwrites it with the revamped vision of some Johnny come lately director. The only thing that’s really certain at this point, is that nobody really knows anything about the plot of JJ Abrams’ new Star Trek, and anyone claiming to have the inside track should be laughed at and ignored.
That said, I’m here to report on the latest rumor regarding Trek’s plot. It may turn out to be right, it may turn out to be vapor, but if you’re afraid of having the movie spoiled for you then I suggest you click elsewhere…
Now.
The guys over at Screenrant have posted an unverified rumor from a scooper claiming to know everything there is to know about the new movie. He claims, as have some of the other plot rumor-mongers, that the real star of the movie is Spock, with the other announced characters as more ancillary figures. Nothing new in that, we’ve heard it before. What is new is that their scooper suggests that James T. Kirk will not be captain of the Enterprise in the film. Instead, the Enterprise will be helmed by the guy who came before Kirk, Captain Christopher Pike. Much later in the film, Jim Kirk and the Enterprise crew we know and love show up in another ship to help Captain Pike out.
That actually sounds good. It could work without ruining continuity. Kirk served aboard several other ships in various capacities before becoming Captain of the Enterprise, and it gives him a way to interact with Spock without rewriting Trek history to concot some ridiculous premise which has them serving at the Academy together.
Unfortunately, from there on out the scooper’s plot rumor gets a little dicey. He goes on to claim that the movie is about the maiden voyage of the Enterprise NCC-1701… which would not fit in with established Trek lore since Captain Pike is the ship’s second commander. On her maiden voyage she’s commanded by Captain Robert April.
Their scooper then goes on to claim that the movie’s bad guys will be Klingons and not Romulans as rumored, which would be great since Romulans aren’t supposed to be seen in pre-Original series Trek era. Except we know Eric Bana is the movie’s bad guy and his character’s name is Nero. Nero is definitely not the name of a Klingon.
So here’s the way I see this mess. If you were to take all the varied rumors we’ve heard about this movie’s plot into a big pot and stir them together, I think you’d come up with this: A bad guy Romulan named Nero travels back in time to the first voyage of the Enterprise intent on wreaking havoc. Old Spock follows him back in time in an attempt to stop him, and while there encounters Christopher Pike and the crew of the Enterprise, who are involved in some sort of entanglement with the Klingons. At some point James T. Kirk shows up, and suddenly everything starts fitting together. If even half the rumors we’ve heard are true, to me that seems to be the general direction they’re all pointing to.
Or maybe JJ Abrams is planning to paint the Enterprise pink and put Yeoman Rand on roller skates. Enjoy all the speculating Trekkies, Paramount isn’t talking.
