The confrontation scene between Loki and Tony Stark in The Avengers has been featured heavily in a lot of the recent ads, and it seems clear that the chance to see Robert Downey Jr. smack talk Tom Hiddleston will be but one of the many highlights of the movie. But in a new clip posted at MTV, you can actually see the scene play out as a scene, with no footage intercut and no cutting away from Tony Stark's many witty retorts. Once again Loki doesn't come across so great-- but since he's the bad guy, I guess that's the point. Check it out below.

Early in the conversation you hear Loki mention "I've met them" when Tony Stark describes the Avengers, proving that we'll see several conflicts between Loki and our heroes before the final big showdown. They also hint at the alien army help that Loki will be getting, and while we don't really know who those creatures will be, we've at least gotten a look at their mighty ship.

What I like most about this clip is how gracefully and naturally the dialogue unspools-- you can really feel Joss Whedon's writing voice in there. It might just be wishful thinking, of course, but The Avengers seems to be hitting that nice middle ground of big superhero movie theatrics with snappy dialogue and enough humor to keep it all from being too heavy. We'll all find out for sure, of course, when the movie finally opens on May 4.
