Tatum Jupiter Ascending

The Wachowski siblings have definitely taken their time building their next sci-fi epic, titled Jupiter Ascending, as we first reported news about the project way back in 2011 - even before they made Cloud Atlas. As long as the wait has been, however, the start of 2014 means that we are now just a few mere months away from seeing the film hit theaters. We got our first look at the movie in a stunning trailer that debuted early last month, but now Entertainment Weekly has posted an exclusive preview of their very own, launching the still that you see above.

In case you don't recognize him underneath all of the makeup and facial hair, that's star Channing Tatum in full action mode as the film's male lead. He plays a character named Caine, a genetically engineered hunter who works to protect a young woman (Mila Kunis) on Earth from the evil Queen of the Universe. From the looks of this image it would appear that he is a pretty brave fighter, and uses both a futuristic pistol and some kind of energy shield. What this photo sadly doesn't really show off is the hero's funny-looking pointed ears, but you can get a better glimpse of those in the trailer below:

Tatum became a bona-fide A-lister back in 2012 when he starred in The Vow, Magic Mike and 21 Jump Street, but 2013 was a bizarrely off year for the star. His roles were extremely limited in both Jon Chu's G.I. Joe: Retaliation (a franchise he was once the head of) and Steven Soderbergh's Side Effects, and Roland Emmerich White House Down was one of the most notable flops of the year. The good news is that he'll have more than a few chances to right the ship this year. Not only does he have Jupiter Ascending coming out on July 18th (one week earlier than it was originally scheduled), but also has Bennett Miller's Foxcatcher, Phil Lord and Chris Miller's The LEGO Movie and 22 Jump Street, and the animated Day of the Dead film The Book of Life. The titles are all pretty well spread out over the entire year, so expect little wait between Tatum projects in 2014.

Thanks to how absolutely amazing Cloud Atlas was (albeit tremendously underrated and under-seen), I currently have a lot of faith in the Wachowskis. The sci-fi world they built here looks incredibly cool and stylistic, and if they can back that up with solid plot execution we should be in for a treat. They've assembled an incredibly talented supporting cast around Tatum and Kunis, including Sean Bean, Eddie Redmayne, Douglas Booth, James D'Arcy and Doona Bae, and I can't wait to see the result of the collaboration.
