It’s official. The trades are confirming what we already knew. Chris Pine and Karl Urban are officially signed to the cast of JJ Abrams’ new version of Star Trek.
Chris Pine, as previously reported, is playing a younger version of the Captain Kirk originally played by the great William Shatner. And, as previously rumored, former Lord of the Rings, muscle-bound bit-player Karl Urban will play Doctor Leonard “Bones” McCoy, a role originally made famous by the dearly departed DeForest Kelly. They join and already confirmed cast of Simon Pegg as Scotty, John Cho as Sulu, Anton Yelchin as Chekov, Zoe Saldana as Uhura, Leonard Nimoy as classic Spock, Zachary Quinto as new Spock, and Eric Bana as Nero, the movie’s villain.
Now that we’ve got that out of the way… what the hell is this movie about again? Abrams still has things under wraps. All we know for certain is that in some vague way it’ll be about the early days of the Enterprise crew. Will they turn the Enterprise into a souped-up import and turn the crew into street-racers? At this point, anything is possible. Hold your breath.
