The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug Will Adventure On To Blu-ray In April
There are only a few home entertainment releases each year that boast enough fans to encourage a Blu-ray set of epic proportions, filled with bonus features and sometime cute but gimmicky figurines, etc. One of those sets is headed into homes this spring, when Warner Bros. Home Entertainment unleashes The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug onto Blu-ray 3D Combo Pack, Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD and Digital HD. All of those excellent options for buyers will be available starting on April 8.
See that epic photo of the brand new release? That’s the Limited Collector’s Edition Blu-ray 3D Combo Pack. There will be 25,000 copies available of the limited edition, so it’s not super rare, but it is collectible, and will feature two Gates of Erebor replica bookends. I promise those aren’t as cool as the giant hippo bookends that adorn my bookcase, but they’re close. The bookends, plus the cool packaging and the 3D Blu-ray will list at $105.43, which means it’ll cost a pretty penny.
Squeezing a little more money out of the Desolation of Smaug release makes total sense, as the flick’s predecessor, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was the #1 home entertainment title of 2013. Warner Bros. is likely hoping to nab the same kind of purchasing loyalty with the second film in Peter Jackson’s latest franchise, and is offering fans a ton of different ways to purchase the flick. So, if $105.43 seems a little steep, the Blu-ray Combo Pack, sans the 3D, will only list for 35.99 and DVD copies will run at $28.98 before any sales.
I know there are probably some readers already discussing waiting for the extended edition of the set. We all know the extended edition footage for Jackson’s films are where it’s at, but the regular theatrical release doesn’t look to shabby, either, coming with a slew of bonus features. What I like most about Warner Bros.’ upcoming release is that all hard copies of the film will come with the same bonus features, so there’s no need to root around for a specific copy to make sure you get everything. The bonus features look good, too, taking fans behind-the-scenes during the production of the film to places like Mirkwood, Lake-town and Dale. Additional production diaries will take fans across New Zealand and into the heart of the making of the film. You can check out the full list of extras, below.
