Monsters: Dark Continent Teaser Trailer Delivers Dead Beasts, Military Men, And A Whole Lot Of Dust

The cinematic landscape is full of movies that definitely do not need sequels, but unfortunately, the horror and sci-fi genres are cesspools of unnecessary continuations. Case in point, the above teaser trailer for Monsters: Dark Continent, courtesy of Empire. The movie is a follow-up to 2010ís surprisingly enjoyable low-budget Monsters, the first feature from director Gareth Edwards, who is serving as executive producer for this flick. Perhaps if this were an actual trailer and not just a dust-filled clip, I might be a little more excited. Perhaps not.

Edwards is busy with his second monster movie, the upcoming Godzilla reboot, so the sequel has been put in the hands of another first-time filmmaker, Tom Green (Not the one who puts his bum on things.) Green is most famous for directing a handful of episodes of the riotous British sci-fi series Misfits, which is one of my favorite shows - or at least it was during its first two seasons. More recently, he directed a couple of episodes of the British drama Blackout, with Christopher Eccleston. This is another reason to put faith in Green, and itíll be interesting to see how he meshes with a larger project.

"As soon as I watched Monsters I completely identified with the idea of using real locations as a foundation on which to build a world of limitless scale,Ē Green explained to Empire. ďFrom my first visit to the location shown here, in Jordan, it was somewhere I felt was key to making Dark Continent work. The moonscape-like environment was the perfect basis for an Ďaliení landscape"

The teaser doesnít really give much of an indication one way or the other. I like the ominous tone, and the visual of a giant tentacled creature being driven away on a truck will get me every time. But just watching military men slowly walk through the dust and stare off at something that I canít see isnít that intriguing. Donít get me wrong, I love the fact that itís all a single unbroken shot, but I need a jolt of something to get my blood flowing here.

The film is being touted as a continuation of the first film, but since neither of the first movie's protagonists are in this one it seems more like a spin-off than anything. The screenplay was written by Jay Basu, whose most recent work was co-writing Sid Bennettís halfway decent found footage adventure film The Dinosaur Project, another movie that made the most of a tiny budget.

Monsters: Dark Continent stars Joe Dempsie (Game of Thrones), Johnny Harris (Snow White and the Hunstman), Sam Keeley (This Must be the Place), Parker Sawyer (Austenland), Nicholas Pinnock, Sofia Boutella and Jesse Nagy. It should be coming out at some point in 2014, though a specific date has not yet been set.
