Star Trek Stung By Strike

By Josh Tyler: 2007-11-26 13:53:04
Star Trek Stung By Strike Now entering its fourth week, the WGA strike is starting to have unexpected consequences. We knew it would turn television into a re-run wasteland and prevent movies with unfinished scripts from going into production, but what I at least hadn’t considered is what sort of impact the strike might have on movies already in production.

One such movie is Star Trek, currently shooting on the Paramount lot. The script is done, so the movie is go, but the strike is still causing them problems. Writer John August has been blogging about the strike on his site, and recently spoke with Trek director JJ Abrams and Trek producer Damon Lindelof on the picket line.

Here’s the problem they told him they're facing on Trek: Abrams is a member of the WGA. As a member of the WGA, he’s following their edict not to write anything. He’s still making his movie and shooting it from a script someone else wrote and finished. But Abrams can’t make any changes to it. Normally he might add a line or change something here or there as he goes, as many directors often do. Now he can’t. The script he has is exactly what he must shoot. In his description of Lindelof and Abrams’ frustration August says, “J.J. was describing a scene he was shooting the day before. Midway through it, he got a great idea for a new line. Which he couldn’t write. Couldn’t shoot. Couldn’t be in his movie. Damon described it like having one of your superpowers taken away.”

Can a movie be shot without making any changes to the script? Of course. Could it be even better if Abrams’ is allowed to tweak it? Probably. And this isn’t just a problem on Star Trek. Every movie currently in production is up against this wall. The script they have is what they’re stuck with. They can’t change anything. Not a single line. If you’re a screenwriter, maybe that’s a good thing. If you’re a movie lover… it’s probably not.

But let’s end this story on a high note. Here’s something that should cheer my fellow Trekkies up. TrekMovie reports that the new Star Trek film is paying geeky homage to classic Trek by shooting in one of the original series’ most well-known locations. JJ Abrams’ Star Trek prequel will be shooting at Vasquez Rocks Natural Area Park, best known for the signature, jutting rock formation around which Captain James T. Kirk fights the lizard-like Gorn in hand to hand combat, during the TOS episode Arena. The location has also been used in numerous other Trek productions, including Star Trek IV, and episodes of The Next Generation, Voyager, and Enterprise. Check it out a shot of it in Star Trek IV below. You’ll know it when you see it.
