We should have seen this coming. Twilight fans have completed the transition from crazy, creepy, panty-waving grannies into an angry, violent, mob. Serenity fans, you have just been supplanted as fandom’s most embarrassingly over the top fan group. At least you never hurt any little kids, except your own, whom you humiliated when you forced her to spend Halloween dressed as River, even though she wanted to go as Hannah Montana.
According to reports from all around the web, things turned ugly at a Twilight fan event in San Francisco. Roughly 3,000 Twilighties showed up at the Stonestown Galleria mall this morning to see the film’s vampire star Robert Pattinson. The crowd was ten times bigger than expected… and quickly got completely out of control. TMZ describes it as turning into a “mob scene”, in which things eventually got so wild that kids were being crushed by the pushing throng. There’s at least one report of a girl with a bloodied, broken nose. The event was soon cancelled.
Comments left by attendees at the fan site Twilight Lexicon Blog describe the scene as crazy, chaotic, ridiculous. Says one Twilighter, “People got mobbed and run over, pushed up against the windows, it was crazy.” Some attendees seem to be blaming the event organizers for not being prepared for such a large crowd, but many seem to think that badly behaved fans are to blame. Says one attendee: “I completely blame the fans for this cancellation. Everything would have worked out smoothing if these annoying teenage girls would only listen.” Says another, “I heard they canceled it because people at the front were refusing to stand in a line. Idiots. Thanks to them they ruined everything.”
I’ve been to fan events where bigger than expected crowds showed up. In most cases, those fans were able to bond together over their shared love of whatever it was they were there for, and keep things cool. In fact, one of the real joys of going to fan events like these is usually how friendly and well behaved everyone is, with or without security guards playing nanny. Apparently this is not true of Twilight fans. There’s another Twilight event tomorrow, Tuesday, in Dallas. Will there be riots? Parents with small children: consider staying home.

I live on the island of Malta and I've been waiting for the movie since I saw a trailer about 5 months ago. I'd never heard of the books, got them all and was immediately hooked. Now I'm in despair as it seems the local cinema distributor may show Twilight in the future but no idea if and when that will happen !
I would be very pleased to become penfriends with any fellow twilighters (im 38 : >) so please write to me to share news, images etc - Ellie Hair, c/o "Mon Reve" 199 Flat 1 Kent Street, Fgura, FGR 1558, Malta
I look forward to hearing from all fans out there
"We should have seen this coming. Twilight fans have completed the transition from crazy, creepy, panty-waving grannies into an angry, violent, mob..."
CREEPY, panty-waving grannies?? This is just so insulting. And unecessary.
They were just a bunch of overexcited and tired KIDS who weren't being properly organized, geez. And if anyone there was over 18 they don't appreciate being called grannies.
I'm glad you weren't around to cover appearances by the Beatles or Elvis, but I suppose you could amuse yourself by taunting the fans lining up for the midnight screening of the next Harry Potter movie or something.
How could they NOT expect such a big turnout!? For Christ's sake, the it was published on the front page of MySpace... I was one of those people on the list, number 300 something. I got into the line towards the end and everyone in front of me and in back of me were also on that list.
I still believe whether the list was official or not, it should have been considered. That list had everyone's name who was standing in line up until 5AM.
Eventually, I went home around 11AM because we were told the event was indefinitely canceled.
I live an hour and a half away (not as bad as other people but still...) and am PISSED OFF that the whole Hot Topic management and SFPD lied to thousands of fans.
Hot Topic most definitely did not do everything they could to organize this event. Most of the cops and organizers didn't even know who Rob Pattinson was. Oh and by the way, one of the officers said that Rob Pattinson called the SFPD directly and asked to cancel the event, which he obviously did not if you've seen the View from the Bay. They should have done research and seen how big the fan base is. I mean come on! This was the only showing in all of California! How could they not expect this many people? I was there yesterday morning and most people I met and talked with were very polite and cheery considering the situation. This incident is Hot Topic and the securities fault. It ultimately came down to them to make this go smoothly. Instead, they had us all bunched up while the ONE security guy chatted on the side with people. If they had a barricade of cops early in the morning, none of this would have happened. It was NOT the list people who were causing most of the problems. It was the people in front. They wouldn't move back even an inch because they were afraid of losing their places. I was in the MIDDLE and got crushed into a planter. The manner in which we were all blatantly lied to by the SFPD and Hot Topic is just disgusting.
The mall did everything they could to organize for this event. Hot Topic had no idea this would get the overwhelming reception it received. Trust me, there was no way they could have anticipated what happened at the mall. It was unfortunate, but luckily a few *patient* fans were able to meet Rob and did so in an orderly, organized manner.
for all those who want to know, he DID show up at 6pm! he saw everyone who got their wristband and i was lucky enought to meet him. he is 10 times sexier in person and he was so incredibly nice and he seemed relaxed even though there was about 100 screaming girls right ouside the store
THANKS for coming ROB!!!
You know what after work i went to the mall around 6pm and there was still a huge throng of people. They said the Q&A was cancelled but i still got a bunch of pics and by the time robert actually came out of the store people were running and shoving i barely got a video of it and it was hetic! people were still screaming and shouting by the time it was over! he walked out and his guards were already crowding him from people with cameras, but i totally saw him do his little thing where he brushes his hand through his hair before people shoved into me! haha! it was crazy! i met a new friend there and we agreed to the same thing.. there should have been a certain age limit or like a closed area, there was unsupervised teen girls there and they were the ones who shoved and elbowed. im glad i had a sweater and my bag pack on or i wouldve had some major bruising!!
i was there early this morning and was upset to hear that some random fan started making an unathorized, un approved llist of fans and numbering thier hands. so any comments about a list were not involved with the mall, or hot topic or the employees or their security. Then the employee from hot topic on the megaphone was trying to get EVEERYONE to form a line, but the "mob" was those who were on the list. the reason the mob was there was because people were upset that the list was not being considered. The mall never mentioned a list to people that called the day before and so there fore the employees did the right thing by telling them to line up since they also told others who called before the event days prior that no one was to line up prior to 7am! also parents of kids that were in the mob stood on the side of the parking lot WATCHING, not getting their kids to go in line, while parents of the kids in line actually helped security move the line back while they asked before the pd showed up. when the pd showed up everyone started backing the line up more faster and drastically to do what they could but the mob refused to move while the parents over their still watched. The fans were asked to leave and that it was cancelled after a girl passed out in the mob and the mob refused to move to let the ambulance in or help get to her. then around 9:20 the mall opened and a line formed at the entrance of the hot topic where fans recieved 10% off coupons for the store. The cancelled event was then uncancelled later on and is going on as i am leaving this message
