Stylized Spartan warriors hacked, slashed, speared and stormed their way through theaters this weekend and made their stand handily in the number one position. Frank Miller's 300 took in a warlord's bounty of $70 million making it the biggest opening of 2007 so far, replacing Ghost Rider which opened at $45 million. It didn't hurt that the film had no other new release competition, but it's still an impressive turn out for a rated R movie released in March.
Wild Hogs was a distant second place with $28 million while everything else in the top ten floated about aimlessly under 300's massive shadow. A few films even managed to climb upwards. Among them was Amazing Grace which snuck back into the tenth place spot after quickly dropping out last weekend. For the whole line up see the full top ten list below.
Next week horror schmaltz Dead Silence, Chris Rock comedy I Think I Love My Wife and Sandra Bullock thriller Premonition will all compete for the opportunity to bore you to tears. Look for none of the above to top 300 as the Spartans regroup for another week on top of the heap.
