This morning’s debut trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was a feast for the eyes of millions of wall-crawler fans out there, with the preview teasing many awesome details, storylines, and character developments that we can expect in next year’s blockbuster. Just about every frame is filled with some kind of treat and now, thanks to Total Film, we have the above video, which features director Marc Webb and stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Dane DeHaan and Jamie Foxx breaking down exactly what we’re looking at.

As noted by Sean in his feature, one of the biggest surprises in the trailer is the appearance of both Vulture’s wings and Dr. Octopus’ mechanical arms. It’s an exciting detail for fans, but in the video Webb explains why you shouldn’t get too excited for them in this movie:
"The big prominent villain in this movie is Electro, but there’s many adversaries that Spider-Man is going to have to face. The consistent thing about them all is the evil empire known as OsCorp… or what’s becoming this evil empire. I think that’s something that may inform some people’s viewing of the trailer."

One villain we will definitely be seeing come to life in full-form is The Rhino a.k.a. Aleksei Mikhailovich Sytsevich (played by Paul Giamatti). In the breakdown Webb goes into detail about the process of transferring a comic book character to the big screen, but the most interesting detail that he reveals is that the costume had to look like something he could build himself. If this is true, how does OsCorp fit into the mix? Is it possible that what we see in the trailer is only the first version of the Rhino suit?

Another mystery that has been partially answered is the one surrounding Harry Osborn, who will be played by DeHaan. The movie’s vague official plot description says that the character is an old friend who is returning, but it was never explained where he was returning from. Thanks to DeHaan’s statements in the video above, we now know that Harry and Peter were childhood friends who were separated when the former went off to private school. The actor doesn’t say anything about Harry’s relationship with his father or the Green Goblin, so we’ll just have to wait and see how that plays out on the big screen.

Finally there’s the softer side of the story that sees Peter’s relationship with Gwen Stacy (Stone) develop. In the video the actress says that the character is graduating from high school and potentially looking at going to college in Oxford – which would, of course, take her far away from Peter and his duties in New York. Before that can happen, however, the director teases that her relationship with a superhero might have some serious consequences for her:
"One of the difficult things that Spider-Man and Peter Parker have to face is that the people he loves are often put into danger. And that’s one of the brutal, difficult ways that Spider-Man’s adversaries can attack Spider-Man, by attacking the ones he loves. So she may be in danger from time to time, we’ll see."

That’s some seriously dark, vague talk right there.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 hits theaters on May 2, 2014.
