Eureka centers on a small town somewhere on the northern Pacific coast. The town sheriff is Jack Carter and being of above average intelligence, he’s the least intelligent resident of the community. Eureka was established by Harry Truman, Albert Einstein and a number of other trusted advisors in the post WWII years. The community is made up entirely of geniuses (Carter being the exception). In the first season, Carter came across the town when transporting his delinquent daughter Zoe back to her mother’s home in California. A series of events lead him to stay in this quirky little town and take over the job of sheriff.

The town was set up so that some of the smartest people in the world could have a place to live and work without being bothered by the outside world. Plus, the town is top secret, giving these brainiacs a private place to discover and invent without their projects being exposed. Here people are constantly researching and inventing things and naturally, projects often go awry and personal dramas ensue. When the third season premieres, the Department of Defense sends a “corporate fixer” to town while an anti-missile test is taking place.

I’ve heard good things about Eureka. I did catch a few episodes of the series when it first premiered on SciFi but as my taste in science fiction is fairly limited (Battlestar Galactica being one of the few exceptions), the series just didn’t appeal to me. Though judging by the preview for the new season, I might have to give the show another chance. It looks like fun. It also seems like Carter, who is the resident “normal” guy in the community, might serve as a humorous contrast to the mega-geniuses that reside in this town.
