American Idol: Shocking Non-Elimination Week

By Kelly West: 2007-04-25 22:03:05
American Idol: Shocking Non-Elimination Week The much-awaited (and promoted) ‘Idol Gives Back’ results show aired tonight and the show made good on their promises of celebrity guests and A-List performers. Millions of dollars were raised by sponsors to help needy children all over the world and viewers were invited to make donations via phone or through the show’s website. Some of the celebrity appearances were limited to brief pre-recorded words of support while others, including Jack Black and Ellen DeGeneres helped to lighten up the event between some very emotionally heavy video clips of African children, Katrina victims and many other children in need from around the globe. If that African Children’s Choir or the return of Elvis didn’t get you reaching for your wallet, I don’t know what will. Seacrest shocked us all when they announced at the end of the episode that no one would be eliminated.

Last night, the final six performed inspirational songs that left many of us pretty uninspired. Luckily Jordin topped off the night with an amazing rendition of “You’ll Never Walk Alone.” It was a little shaky at the start but she really brought it together at the end and delivered a fantastically emotional performance. If I had to rate the remaining Idols’ performances from last night, I’d probably put Blake Lewis second with his performance of the great John Lennon’s “Imagine.” The judges complained that he didn’t make the song his own but I credit Lewis for keeping it simple. The power of the song is in the words and the simplicity of the melody. Jazzing it up or trying to modernize it would’ve only butchered the song.

After Ryan told Chris he was safe, we were meant to believe that Jordin, a front-runner for the final-two, had been eliminated. As it turned out, there would be no elimination tonight. Judging by her tearful reaction, Sparks didn’t appear to be in on the joke. With no elimination this week, the votes from last night will be added to the votes from next Tuesday’s performances. Next Wednesday two Idols will be eliminated from the competition.

If you could have eliminated one Idol tonight, who would you pick to go? Comment below or vote in the poll:
