Glee To Cover Call Me Maybe In Season 4 Premiere
Many of Glee’s characters have moved on from McKinley High, but that doesn't mean the New Directions Club is headed in a completely new direction. Instead, the high school singing group will start out Season 4 with a note similar to the show's Season 2 opener, when the cast sang the then-popular track “Empire State of Mind.” This season, the club will sing their little hearts out to this summer’s biggest pop song, “Call Me Maybe.”
Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe” has sold over 5 million copies in the United States, and it's not a big surprise Fox’s hit musical show would like the chance to take advantage of the song’s success. Glee recordings are released on iTunes after the covers air on television and the 18-49 demographic has always been a bit more excited about the group's covers of recent songs—like Adele’s “Rumor Has It” last season—which should ensure a few extra digital buys. Hey, if Cookie Monster is not above capitalizing on the Canadian singer’s song, why should Glee be?
According to EW, the “Call Me Maybe” cover will appear in Season 4’s first episode, set to air on September 13. The episode is titled “The New Rachel” and will pick up after graduation. There will be a lot of absences to fill in the New Directions Club and a lot of new paths for some of our main characters to forge, and I can’t wait to see if the changes in environment will spice up the Glee format a little bit.
Fox’s Glee will premiere Thursday, September 13 at 10 p.m. ET.
