Between making movies, Will Ferrell’s been keeping the funny going with his website, FunnyorDie.com. Now it looks like HBO wants a piece of the hilarity because they’ve recently bought a “small equity stake” in the site. What’s more, they’re getting 10 half-hours of programming out of the deal as well.
FunnyOrDie.com is owned by Ferrell as well as Adam McKay, Chris Henchy and Judd Apatow. The website consists of funny video clips, some of which are submitted from various sources (they have a whole collection of clips from The Office, for example), while others are videos created by the owners. The “Landlord” sketch (shown below) stars Will Ferrell and has been viewed over 50 million times.
Variety reports that in addition to the 10-half hour segments, which could range from stand-alone entries to multiple installments of the same story, the deal could also include other future projects between HBO and FunnyOrDie.com.
Considering the nature of the comedy in the original clips featured on FunnyOrDie.com is very adult-oriented, it seems only appropriate that HBO (or any other pay-cable channel that isn’t limited to the same guidelines as the regular networks) be the place for the website. Ferrell certainly seems pleased with the deal, saying, “We do know we want it to be in the same family of the comedy that we're doing on the website -- just a wide range of anything from a funny offbeat talkshow to a maybe more-traditional-type sitcom to a show with puppets.” Puppets? This should be interesting.
And in case you’re not one of the people who contributed to the 50 million-plus view count of the classic “Landlord” video (or you just can’t watch it enough), here you go:
