Suite Life On Deck's Zoey Deutch Scrubs Her Way Into Better Gig

It’s not often fuzzy, cutely dressed teenagers who’ve spent their careers on The Disney Channel make it elsewhere. It’s been a good year for the cast of Suite Life On Deck, whose character actress, Maya, played by Zoey Deutch, has joined the cast of Hallelujah, a pilot set to premiere on ABC. This comes only a few months after anchor actress Brenda Song, known on the show as London Tipton, gained laud in David Fincher’s The Social Network.

While Hallelujah isn’t as big-league as a film like The Social Network, the musical drama is coming from Marc Cherry, who created Desperate Housewives. The pilot will surround a town in Tennessee that is in the midst of some drama-drama, and will feature music bits from a gospel choir interjected throughout. So, I would say it’s a safe bet to guess Deutch has some singing skill.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Deutch will join a cast who has been around the T.V. block, including Law and Order’s Jesse L. Martin, Terry O’ Quinn of Lost, West Wing, and Alias fame, and Donal Logue, from the recently defunct series Terriers, among others. If the pilot does well and Deutch sticks around, this could mean big things for her. Well, bigger than a recurring love interest guest spot on Suite Life.
