Veep Making-Of Featurette With Julia Louis-Dreyfus And Armando Iannucci
Armando Iannucci may be a big name in the United Kingdom but most North American audiences have probably never heard of him or seen his brilliant television series. They may or may not be familiar with his Oscar nominated and irreverently hilarious In The Loop (if not, seek it out immediately) but that's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Iannucci created comedy. Fortunately, the man behind The Thick of It and I'm Alan Partridge has set his next series on this side of the pond, with Veep aiming his sharp satirical voice at the office of the vice president. Here's the new "Making Veep" promo from HBO.
HBO's Veep looks like it will cover familiar territory for the award winning show runner as many of Iannucci's previous efforts satirize the political process, including the aforementioned Academy Award nominated In The Loop and the BAFTA winning The Thick of It. While these previous efforts primarily focused on the British Government, this new show starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Selina Meyer is about the woman currently holding the ineffectual office of the vice president of the United States. From what little we've seen, the series seems similar in tone and style to his previous comedies and hopefully he can deliver as many laughs without Malcolm Tucker.
It's odd that HBO has been rather mum on the series considering it's new, from an Academy Award nominee and, well, the premiere is fast approaching. Last week the network ramped up the campaign with a clever new poster for Veep but we've still only seen one actual trailer (titled “The Core”) for the new series which is kind of a double edged sword. By keeping the footage hidden, it's doing a good job of getting those of us already anticipating the series amped up but it's certainly not helping sell those unaware of his work hear about the series or know what kind of comedy to expect. Let me assure you, with the wealth of political absurdity in Washington for Iannucci to draw from, it should be great.
Veep premieres on Sunday, April 22 on HBO. It stars Julia Louis Dreyfus, Matt Walsh, Tony Hale, Anna Chlumsky, Sufe Bradshaw, Tim Simons and Reid Scott. It was created by Armando Iannucci.
