The X Factor Reportedly Planning To Fire Britney Spears
File this one under rumor for now, as nothing is confirmed and the source is unnamed, however, word is that Britney Spears' judging and mentoring gig on The X Factor may end up being just a one-season job. Reports are stating that the pop star is being fired from the job. This news comes just a week after the singing competition series wrapped up its second season, crowning country singer Tate Stevens as the winner.
According to US Magazine, a source tells them that Spears, who was brought in to replace one of the two previous judges (Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger) from Season 1, is on her way out as judge on The X Factor.
"Britney will get the boot," an insider tells Hot Stuff of the pop star, who joined the show in May, along with fellow newcomer Demi Lovato. "Producers wanted her for the long haul, but it isn't working."
Another source tells them that the reason for Spears' reported planned exit is her whopping $15 million contract, which sources say she hasn't earned. And another source says that Simon Cowell is behind the decision, saying, "He wanted crazy Britney, but he got boring Britney."
On one hand, one could look at the final results of this season and say that Britney didn't do so bad. After all, one of her singers made it to the final two, as it came down to Tate Stevens (who won) and Britney's contestant Carly Rose Sonenclar, who came in second. But it doesn't sound like her mentoring is the issue here. From what the one source said, it seems Cowell was looking for something more attention-grabbing from the pop star. The X Factor's ratings have slipped down in its second season, and when you factor in the hefty price the series paid in getting Spears to the judges table, it's not especially difficult to understand why they might be planning (or considering) to fire Spears, regardless of whether or not the ratings decline is her fault.
At this point, it doesn't sound like anything's official though, so we'll keep you posted on this news if and when there's an update.
