Critically Praised But Underseen Cedar Rapids Ready To Impress In June
By Jessica Grabert
Cedar Rapids has been woefully underseen in its theatrical release. Part of this might have been due to a lack of interest, but some of this may have had to do with a poorly thought-out theatrical expansion. Cedar Rapids did come to my hometown at some point, which is more than I can say about most towns in Indiana, but it was only in release here for one weekend before dying out with a slow, inaudible gasp. It never even had a chance to stand up on its own two feet.
Just because Cedar Rapids flew under the radar doesn’t mean it isn’t worth seeing. I’m not trying to pull an Aesop lesson here, but this movie has gotten little box-office love for a movie garnering such good ratings. Not as little as poor Swimming With Sharks, I suppose, but for a movie featuring Ed Helms, John C. Reilly, Anne Heche, and Sigourney Weaver, I guess I hoped certain audiences would have bothered to show up.
It’s not too late. Cedar Rapids will be hitting Blu-Ray and DVD on June 21st. You can’t get the whole popcorn-and-feet-on-the-chair-in-front-of-you experience, but Fox Home Entertainment is trying hard to make your viewing as memorable as possible. They’ve piled on a ton of special features to lure you in. It might work for some people, if a DVD release with six deleted scenes, a gag reel, a Top Notch commercial, and three featurettes, including “Mike O’Malley-Urban Clogger” is your thing. Springing for the Blu-Ray will get you the DVD extras, as well as “Convention Connection” interviews with many of the Cedar Rapids characters, Fox Movie Channel interviews with director Miguel Arteta, and a segment on BD Live called “Ed Helms Mad Chopper Skills.”
It's likely someday Cedar Rapids will turn into a cult classic; it's up to you decide how early or late you arrive at the party.
