The endless commercials for The Unborn permanently ingrained the image of a creepy old guy with a backwards head crawling up the stairs into our minds. If, for some reason that must be even odder than the film’s plot, you’d like to own it, you can pick it up when it hits DVD and Blu-ray on July 7th.
Casey Beldon (Odette Yustman) is having a tough time getting a good night sleep. After consistently being tormented by horrifying images during the night, she goes to a spiritual adviser (Gary Oldman) for help. She eventually discovers she is being haunted by a dybbuk, a malevolent spirit thought to be the dislocated soul of a dead person. This spirit uses its ability to inhabit whatever creature it likes to torment Casey and anyone who tries to help her.
I don’t think Ambien is going to do the trick in Casey’s case. Actually, maybe you should take some yourself before turning on this movie. I can see how Yustman got suckered into starring in this film. Here last performance, as Beth McIntyre in “Cloverfield,” wasn’t exactly Oscar worthy, but Oldman, Meagan Good, Cam Gigandet and Carla Gugino? Why?
Good choice on Universal’s part not to have the audience endure further suffering by including bonus material. The DVD version only includes some deleted scenes and the Blu-ray one adds on access to BD-Live features. Both also come with the theatrical version of the film and an unrated one. Maybe the lack of bonus material made Universal desperate to add some run time to the disc because the unrated version clocks in at just one minute longer than the rated one. Is that one-minute that good? I doubt it.
If you’d like to star in your own horror movie head over to the video store and buy The Unborn on DVD for $29.98. To create the unrated version of your film, just spend a whopping $39.98 to be tortured by the Blu-ray edition.
