Prom Night Gets Awkward… Again In Bart Got A Room

Prom is the most important night of your life. If society hasn’t drilled that concept into your head by now, the immense amount of movies about prom must have. We’ve seen everything from dating bets culminating on that momentous occasion to serial killers picking off students one-by-one. Saved! , American Pie, 10 Things I Hate About You, She’s All That, Never Been Kissed, Prom Night and a myriad of other films all have the big night featured as the plot’s pinnacle. It’s time to make room for some more kids trying to have the prom night of their dreams because Anchor Bay Entertainment releases Bart Got a Room on DVD on July 28th.

Limo? Check. Tux? Check. Hotel Room? Check. Date? Danny’s (Steven Kaplan) prom night is right around the corner and he’s just about everything ready to go; everything except for the most important element, a date. Considering his best friends don’t care much and his recently divorced parents (William H. Macy and Cheryl Hines) are consumed by their own unsuccessful quests to find love, Bart is on his own. And, to make matters worse, the school’s biggest loser, Bart, already has a date.

The whole prom planning and disaster film may have been done one too many times before, but Bart Got a Room takes that cliché genre and rubs a little indie on it giving it a gritty feel. Kaplan keeps Danny comfortably awkward while Macy and Hines fill in the holes with quirky humor.

The movie is no comedic masterpiece and is slightly ridiculous at points, but it’s an enjoyable 79 minutes. If you’re looking for something to get you to crack a smile on a grim day, Bart Got a Room will do the job. The only bonus features you’ll get with this disc are a pop-up production notebook, the trailer and some sneak peaks, but it’s still worth dropping the $29.98.
