The Total War series may be headed back to Ancient Rome. The latest issue of PC PowerPlay features a teaser image that suggests Total War: Rome 2 is in development.
"But wait," you might say. "The first one was called Rome: Total War. They should call the sequel Rome 2: Total War. Jesus, Pete, what am I paying you for? You're worthless, etc."
Well, the thing is, Creative Assembly recently started putting Total War at the front of their titles. Shogun's sequel, for example, was Total War: Shogun 2. The idea is that they want to promote the Total War brand as much as they can, so that each new game in the series is instantly recognizable.
The announcement of Rome 2 may occur during Rezzed, a PC and indie games show being hosted by Eurogamer and Rock Paper Shotgun. During the show, Creative Assembly plans to do a presentation on the history of the studio. Lead designer James Russell confirmed in May that they'd be talking about the future of the TW series as well. The presentation is scheduled for July 6th, so it's not too far away.
The first Rome took place during the end of the Roman Republic and early days of the Roman Empire. Players controlled one of three prominent Roman families and battled both foreign and domestic enemies in order to become Emperor. Presumably the sequel would take place later in time and depict the fall of the Empire.
The teaser image doesn't tell us much about the game. It does, however, confirm the obvious: you'll be able to smash two big armies together and cackle like a madman.
