One of the most popular things for studios to do in the current console generation is to remaster their older titles with enhanced graphics. Now, one of the last studios to not do that looks to be changing their mind. EA has been the one major studio to not follow the re-release trend, but in a new interview, the publisher admits they're now considering remastering old titles, which may pave the way upgraded Mass Effect titles, among others.
Remastering games for the newest consoles with higher resolution images and improved graphics have become standard practice for nearly every major studio at this point. It's significantly easier, and cheaper, to upgrade an old game than to make a new one. While most studios have taken full advantage of fans desire to play updated versions of their favorite games, EA never has, having gone so far as to say that they weren't interested in looking back. However, in a recent interview with Game Informer, EA executive vice president Patrick Soderlund says that the market has changed since those previous comments and that they are actively looking at the remaster option.
What's changed is that there is proof in the market that people want it, maybe more than there was when we spoke. There were some that did it before, but I think there is even more clear evidence that this is something that people really want. The honest answer is that we are absolutely actively looking at it. I can't announce anything today, but you can expect us most likely to follow our fellow partners in Activision and other companies that have done this successfully.
While no titles are specifically mentioned, the answer came as the response to a question regarding potential Mass Effect remasters. With Mass Effect: Andromeda on its way next year, now would be the perfect time to get the old Mass Effect games in front of people, both to whet the appetite of old players and to potentially get the franchise in front of new fans before the release of their next big title.
It's far from surprising that EA would do a 180 on game remastering. While not every remaster is successful, something Patrick Soderlund points out in the interview, the fact is that people love their old games, and giving their favorite a fresh look is a fairly simple way to attract players. What's more, Mass Effect must be a series under consideration for remastering. So much of EA's catalog is annualized sports titles and it would make little sense to see them get remastered. Mass Effect, and possibly Dead Space, would seem to be the most likely candidates.
Would you purchase remasted copies of the Mass Effect trilogy is they existed? Let us know in the comments.
