NetherRealm released the latest story trailer for Injustice 2 featuring Brainiac. The story seems to be way bigger than we originally thought. While Superman's Regime seemed to be some part of the villainous escapades in Injustice 2, Brainiac's invasion takes things to a whole other level.
The video was recently posted up over on the official Injustice YouTube channel. It starts by showcasing Brainiac's forces invading Earth, overshadowing Metropolis and launching attacks against mankind.
Kara warns Wonder Woman and others about Brainiac's forces, and suggests that they will need the help of Kal (Superman). This potentially explains how Superman gets free from his red-sun prison in Injustice 2. Apparently, they let him out.
Halfway through the trailer Batman goes to Superman... for help.
Apparently, the two reconcile their differences from when Superman was ruling the world with an iron fist under his authoritarian outfit called The Regime.
But it's a bit more complicated than that in Injustice 2. You see, there's another evil outfit called The Society, run by the telekinetic super-villain Gorilla Grodd. Grodd ends up recruiting some of Earth's mightiest villains and tweeners to help him overthrow the remnants of Superman's Regime, and to destroy what's left of the Justice League.
Batman has a mole within Grodd's Society, but that does very little, given that even Grodd's group is under attack from Brainiac's forces in Injustice 2.
This adds a lot more complexity and layers to the story than what we originally thought. This is also a pretty big step up from what they introduced in the original Injustice: Gods Among Us.
Added to all of this, apparently Superman isn't completely "reformed" in the sequel. They hinted at Superman attempting to recruit Supergirl for the restoration of his Regime, putting Kara in a bad place of having to choose between family and duty.
It's hard to tell right now if Superman will attempt to restore the Regime while Brainiac is attempting to take over Earth.
A lot of people in the comment section are absolutely geeked about Injustice 2 since it's one of the few times where the story mode looks like one of the strongest aspects of the game. Even more than that, it looks like NetherRealm really took off the gloves when it comes to layers, complexity and depth for portraying the fan-favorite heroes and villains in the DC Universe.
Heck, they didn't even talk about how Atrocitus fits into all of this. I imagine he'll end up being a wild card in the story. Or at least we can hope that he doesn't get side-lined to just a bit player role, because that would be a real waste of the new character. Anyway, Injustice 2 is due for release on May 16th for the PS4 and Xbox One.
