A new developer diary was released for Star Wars: Battlefront 2, the upcoming release from DICE and Electronic Arts, which also has plenty of help from LucasFilm, Motive, and Criterion Games. The diary delves into how all of the studios came together to work on the story mode starring the new protagonist, Iden Versio.
Blank mentions that Motive's pitch to them was that they wanted to do a story based around the Imperial soldier's point of view because they said that it hadn't been done in that kind of fidelity before.
That partially is and is not true. The entirety of Pandemic's Star Wars: Battlefront 2 campaign mode was all about the 501st Clone Troopers who survived and eventually became known as Vader's Fist. It spanned from the start of the Clone Wars up through the events of the original trilogy. It's still regarded as one of the best told stories in the video game universe of Star Wars and was not only consistent with the lore but also tied in very nicely with Pandemic's gameplay for the original Star Wars: Battlefront 2.
All of that is to say that Motive really has their work cut out for them with the upcoming game, especially since they'll be covering 30 years worth of lore involving Iden Versio and her Inferno Squad troops.
Iden is the daughter of an Imperial navy admiral, and follows loyally the code and principles of the Empire. According to the developers, the story covers how she and the other Stormtroopers aren't just blindly, brainwashed soldiers working for the Empire, but they truly believe in what they're fighting for and the story uncovers why.
They also reveal that Iden is an elite pilot for the Empire. The Inferno Squad are known for both their starfighter skills and their ability to take the fight to the enemy on the ground. According to EA and DICE's description of the unit, they're proficient in both areas of combat, and players will get to see how Inferno Squad handles themselves in space and when battling Rebel troops on the ground in Star Wars: Battlefront 2.
According to Electronic Arts the game will start with Iden and the Inferno Squad arriving on Endor's moon to fight the Rebels, and the story will progress from there. Players will venture to each of the destinations throughout the galaxy while stationed aboard the new raider class Imperial ship exclusively used by Inferno Squad. This is likely where the space battles will commence in Battlefront 2's story campaign.
Electronic Arts and DICE also revealed that Inferno Squad will eventually be betrayed during the course of the story and players will be able to play from the Rebel's side as well, likely hinting at Iden defecting from the Empire after the betrayal takes place.
You'll be able to play through the full story in Star Wars: Battlefront 2 when the game launches on PC, PS4 and Xbox One on November 17th.
