The Artful Escape

While various expected games walked away with the proper nods you would expect, such as Star Wars: Battlefront II -- which was also the most viewed game during E3 -- it was Nintendo's properties that seemed to consistently grab the wins from the established media.

Nintendo and Ubisoft's collaboration on Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle proved to be a fan-favorite despite its bizarre premise about Rabbids invading the Mushroom Kingdom and Mario, Peach, Luigi and Yoshi having to team up with the Rabbids and fight against the evil Rabbids. It was labeled as the Best Original Game on show at E3 this year, even beating out visually fascinating games like The Last Night and cinematic co-op titles like A Way Out. Mario + Rabbids also managed to grab the Best Strategy Game title.

It was Nintendo's other Switch exclusive that also came out on top, Super Mario Odyssey. The quirky sandbox platformer took home the Best of Show award, along with the Best Action/Adventure Game, beating out Naughty Dog's thematically impressive Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. But it wasn't done... Super Mario Odyssey also won the Best Console Game award, making the one game from E3 to come away with the most Game Critics Awards.

Nintendo also managed to steal away the Best Handheld title with Metroid: Samus Returns, which is actually a remake of the second Metroid game from the Gameboy.

Nintendo was bound to win something given that so many of its games were nominated by the 38 different global media outlets who participated in the Game Critics Awards nominations for 2017. The only thing left now is for the Big 'N' to actually deliver the games for the Nintendo Switch throughout the remainder of the year. You can look for Mario + Rabbids to launch in August, and Super Mario Odyssey is due for release this fall.
