Sony and Konami recently announced that a remastering of one of Hideo Kojima's stellar niche projects is in the works for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation VR owners. During the recent Tokyo Game Show opening press conference, it was announced that Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner -- Mars will be remastered for both platforms.
Polygon is reporting that the game will feature full 4K support for those of you with a PlayStation 4 Pro (although it wasn't clarified if this means that the game will be in native 4K or if it will be checkerboarded to reach a 4K resolution) but it was also announced that the remaster isn't just touching up the visuals for Sony's new system, it's also gaining all new HD surround sound support, and the game is being tweaked for a full PlayStation VR experience.
The Zone of the Enders games came out way back in the early 2000s for the PlayStation 2, featuring fast-paced, third-person mecha action. It was following in the footsteps of other popular third-person mech games such as Virtual-On: Cyber Troopers and Armored Core, the latter of which was extremely popular on the PlayStation systems back in the day. Later on during the seventh gen, Konami re-released the games as HD remasters for the PS3 and Xbox 360. Fast-forward a few years later and another remaster is on the way.
During the presentation it was revealed that Cygames would be handling the port duties, and that gamers can expect to see the updated and remastered Zone of the Enders arrive on the PS4 and PSVR in 2018. The presentation was also accompanied by a debut trailer that showcases how some of the VR aspects will work, with players having to fight, dodge, block and attack from within the confines of the cockpit of the mech.
I have no idea how well the fighting will work out in the first-person mode, because sometimes it works great and other times it's kind of a crapshoot. If it's closer to the likes of RIGS then I could definitely see it being a pretty fun game.
Now, in addition to this, Destructoid is reporting that Konami slyly revealed that Zone of the Enders is also coming to PC in 2018 as well. The game will be launching in the spring in Japan, but it's tough to tell if that will also apply to a Western release.
The interesting thing here is that usually PC games have simultaneous releases when launching around the world, so I wonder if there will be English language options already implemented when it does arrive on Steam or if Konami will delay the PC release and launch it alongside the Western release of the game for the PlayStation VR and PlayStation 4?
Either way, some gamers are excited to see this niche gem get a remaster and make a return to form on Sony's latest seventh generation consoles.
