Compulsion Games' We Happy Few started off with a huge bang when it was first announced back in 2015. The game quickly reminded a lot of people of titles like BioShock and Dishonored, fused with A Clockwork Orange, Brazil and its own sort of 1960's disturbia. Well, you won't be able to purchase the game in early 2018 as originally advertised, since the game has been delayed.
According to Polygon, the game has been pushed all the way into the summer of 2018. The game will now launch later on into the year as opposed to launching in April for the Xbox One, PS4, and PC. The news about the delay came along with another update about the game's Early Access state and some of the new features being implemented into We Happy Few, such as the new playable character.
During a developer update, it was mentioned that after four years of development, the team did a review of We Happy Few after it was content complete, and the team decided to completely overhaul the first two hours of the game for the character of Arthur, one of the three playable characters in the game.
Compulsion realized that the early goings of the game didn't really match the pacing of the other two characters, and decided to speed up how the story elements came together by moving them up further into the playthrough. The problem with that decision was that it meant that the team had to completely overhaul the entire early half of Arthur's campaign in order to accommodate the story elements properly. So that's why the game is being delayed into the summer.
The development was going seemingly well for both PC and Xbox One, especially back when the game entered into Early Access on Steam back in 2016 and was then followed up with a Game Preview release on the Xbox One shortly thereafter. A lot of gamers loved the emergent gameplay feel but did note that the gameplay did not quite fit in with the story-oriented themes present in the E3 trailer that got everyone all riled up and excited for We Happy Few, hence why the game is being delayed presumably for the final time.
The developers also revealed the second of the three playable characters, her name is Sally. She's a friend of Arthur and recognizes him while traversing throughout the islands. All three characters will have their stories tie-in together, but we're not entirely sure how it will all end or what will be the outcome. You'll have to wait until the summer to find out.
The game itself centers around a fascist, totalitarian world where everyone lives on a drug called Joy. If you're not on Joy then the coppers come after you and make life miserable for you. The game starts with Arthur, who one day ends up coming off his Joy dosage and eventually escapes from his mundane job after seeing the world for what it really is, a grotesque, violent, disgusting society. Players will attempt to navigate through multiple islands in hopes of escaping from the regime. We Happy Few is due out for PC, PS4 and Xbox One later this year... assuming it doesn't get delayed again.
