Update: Well, that didn't take long. Assassin's Creed Rogue has been officially announced via Game Informer. The magazine is having a double feature of Unity and Rogue in their next issue. They confirmed in their announcement that the protagonist of the game is an Assassin-turned-Templar named Shay Patrick Cormac.
Original article: The first trailer for Assassin's Creed Rogue has leaked. Rogue is a brand-new title in the series being developed for PS3 and Xbox 360.
Unfortunately, Ubisoft has taken down all mirrors of the trailer so I'll just have to describe it. The cinematic trailer is set in an Arctic environment. A Templar with a sword and rifle disembarks from his ship to finish off an Assassin sprawled out on the ice.
The trailer then announces that the game will launch on November 11th. Gamers who pre-order will receive the "Ultimate Hunter Pack." This DLC apparently includes an outfit, sword, and dagger for the main character. You'll also be able to deck out his ship with orange and black sails and a ruby-encrusted wheel.
Though the leaked trailer has been scrubbed from the web, you can check out some screen-caps from the video in the gallery below.
Assassin's Creed Rogue is apparently the final name for Assassin's Creed Comet, a PS3 and Xbox 360 title rumored earlier in the year. Comet was said to take place in 1758 along the Atlantic Coast. The hero was reportedly an English pirate named Shay who once served under Adewale, star of Assassin's Creed 4 DLC Freedom Cry. Today's leak doesn't contradict any of those details.
Ubisoft announced Assassin's Creed Unity earlier this year for PS4, Xbox One and PC. However, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot assured gamers that they wouldn't abandon the PS3 or Xbox 360.
"We have not disclosed our plan yet for the Xbox 360 and PS3 SKUs, however we have made it clear as a company that we will expect to continue supporting both consoles for the foreseeable future," Guillemot said in May.
Many expected Ubisoft to announce the PS3/Xbox 360 Assassin's Creed game at E3. However, the convention came and went without any such reveal. Did they think Assassin's Creed Rogue, developed for older consoles with far larger user bases than the PS4 and Xbox One, would steal the thunder of AC Unity and hurt its sales?
I wonder whether Rogue's leaked trailer will persuade Ubisoft to finally make an announcement. It worked for Assassin's Creed Unity, after all. If not, perhaps Rogue will be revealed at Gamescom? Gamescom 2014 will run from August 13th to 17th.
