The new television spot for Assassin's Creed: Syndicate has gone live, focusing more on the mood of the upcoming game than things like story or gameplay. “Oppression has to end,” states the trailer, and it looks like it's about to end badly for at least one corrupt aristocrat.
In Assassin's Creed: Syndicate, the player will take on the role of sibling assassins, Jacob and Evie Frye. The game is set in 1868 London, a time when the city was undergoing a period of grand advancements, typically achieved on the backs of the lower class.
As is typically the case in the Assassin's Creed games, your job will be to serve as the great equalizer, becoming a hand of justice that fights for those who cannot fight for themselves. Assisting you in your efforts will be a collection of brave ruffians who are willing to take up arms themselves, giving you access to a network of operatives to help carry out your deadly work.
Rather than show off a bunch of clips from in-game action or story beats, this latest TV spot for the game instead gives you an idea of the dynamics at play here. Folks who are lining their pockets by exploiting the poor have caught wind of the fact that forces are moving against them. In the trailer, one such fellow wakes from a nightmare in which he's being pursued by a wave of deadly blades. In this terrifying dream, danger lurks around literally every corner for the poor bastard.
When he wakes from the nightmare, the man discovers that his fears are being realized in the real world. Not only are there folks finally willing to stand up to him, but they are led by a hooded figure who appears to have a “point” he'd like to make.
All in all, I'd say this was a pretty good call for the TV spot. Assassin's Creed is a well-known series at this point, so there's no need to try to get the players pumped up for the running, leaping and stabbing they'll be doing all over the streets of London. Instead, this Syndicate trailer gives you the idea of 1) What it feels like to be truly feared and 2) How cool it will be to lead an army of scallywags.
Set to release on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 come Oct. 23, get ready to take control of your own pair of cloak and dagger heroes, as well as the hordes of folks willing to follow them into battle, in Assassin's Creed: Syndicate.
